Chris claims 'hearty debate' in Summit County Council deliberation

By gary - Posted on 09 October 2010

I am not sure where Chris got all the email addresses of Summit County residents but he is apparently sending out the following form email to his entire list since not just Democrats are receiving it. The email reads:

Dear {a Summit County Resident},

I have been honored to represent you on the Summit County Council for the last two years.

I would appreciate your vote for an additional four year term to assure that our fledging council/manager form of government succeeds.

The County Council as now constituted works very well together. We don’t always agree on everything, but we disagree respectfully after hearty debate.

Would you allow me to put up a sign in your yard?

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns or if you would like to help.

Best regards,

Chris Robinson

I find Robinson's email deceptive for the following reasons:

1. Regarding, "I would appreciate your vote for an additional four year term to assure that our fledging council/manager form of government succeeds." This is great political speak. It insinuates that the council/manager form of government can only be assured success if four (or five) Democrats are on the Council. As Chris would say, "Poppy Cock!", anyone can see through that ruse.

2. Regarding, "The County Council as now constituted works very well together." I suspect from his view that is true since four of the members are Democrats with the Republican either following their lead, not voting, or a 4-1 vote still keeps the Progressive Democrat agenda going strong. To say a political body works well together and that the outcome of the votes are generally a foregone conclusion means in fact there is not a "hearty debate". What it does mean is that the Democrats, which comprise only 15% of the active, registered voters, are controlling the agenda and results. If you believe that the fiscal and legal problems the County faces is good government then vote for Chris. Otherwise, you do have a viable option this year in the candidacy of Gary Shumway. If everyone has their foot on the accelerator and you are heading for a precipice, it is time for someone to hit the brakes!

3. Regarding, "We don’t always agree on everything, but we disagree respectfully after hearty debate." I have attended either or both the business session and public session of the Council every week since mid-June of this year. There have been numerous times when it seemed obvious to me that the voting was discussed before hand and any vehement disagreement, if there were any, was ironed out before hand. Yes, during the past five months I heard disagreement between the members but to call it a "hearty debate" is like calling an acorn a mighty oak. Of course there should be respectful disagreement on the Council but with with four Democrats and one go along to get along Republican, there will not be 'hearty debate' while conducting the people's business. For that there must be someone on the Council who will represent the interests of the portion of residents which are NOT being represented.

Vote Gary Shumway, YOUR independent voice on YOUR Council.
