Gary's Message
I welcome you to my candidate for Summit County Council, Seat 'D' web site!
You have two choices in 2010 as this year there is no registered Republican candidate in the Summit County Council Seat 'D' race. The race is between a candidate championing Democrat/Progressive ideals or myself who reveres our Constitution, champions states rights, open and smaller government, property rights, free enterprise, and bringing sanity to government's fiduciary responsibilities by being fiscally conservative.
Unlike my opponent, I am not a CEO of a holding company with "a broad range of interests in the County." I am a small business owner, thus I will not have to recuse myself from voting on issues that are important to you. I have no business dealings with the County (other than paying taxes). My wife and I own a condo in Jeremy Ranch and a house in Marion (actually the bank owns both). We hold no other property in the County. What this means is that I am able to do the people's business without the potential bias of doing mine.
With three Masters degrees, including an MBA, and my continued education, I have far more didactic instruction than my opponent. Among other institutions of higher learning, I have attended the University of Utah and Utah State University.
I am a member and the Summit County Chair of the Constitution Party but I am not dictated to by the Party. I ran as a Libertarian in 2006 for State Representative and in 2008 on the Constitution Party ticket. I feel politically comfortable in either party or as a Ron Paul Republican. If I were a Democrat, I would have to be a staunch 'Blue Dog' and fight the Progressive/Socialist agenda (unlike Matheson who is a fair weather 'Blue Dog').
Politically, I am fiscally conservative and socially inclusive. I believe our human rights come from God, not government. We must reign in government or government will reign over us.
In order to facilitate open discussion and give the citizens access to their council member, I have created the web site http://www.tellshumway.com. This site will be a forum for citizen discussion of the issues facing us. I will also be able to respond to your queries in a public and timely manner at tellshumway.com. If elected, I plan to include polls on the site so you can vote on the issues and I can get feedback regarding same.
I am a serious and motivated candidate. I have attended every Summit Council meeting since June. I am spending the time and money (my own) to give you a choice of direction for Summit County.
Let me be among the first to implore you to vote person this year, not just party. This is because voting straight party without researching the candidates has weakened our Republic while strengthening the two major parties. Not all Republican candidates are the same. Same with the Democrats or any party, for that matter. Know who you are voting for, then vote your conscience.
Voting your conscience is never a wasted vote. Unless you have no other choice, your vote is only wasted when you vote for the lesser of two evils. This underscores the importance of third-party candidates or even write-ins.
If you MUST vote straight party, please consider taking the time, after voting straight party, to go and vote for a Constitutionalist, Gary Shumway for Summit County Council, Seat 'D'. Voting straight Republican and not taking the time to vote for my candidacy is essentially a vote for the Democrat candidate.
Please consider casting your vote this November 2nd for Gary Shumway, Constitution Party Candidate for Summit County Council, Seat 'D'.
Yours in Liberty!
Gary Shumway
